The Police Foundation Conference

Police Effectiveness in a Changing World

The Police Foundation’s Annual Conference – the ‘only’ independent Police Conference

Wednesday 28 September 2011, BT Auditorium and Customer Showcase, London

Dear Colleague,

The need for effective policing to reduce crime, in smarter ways with limited resources, has become a constant refrain in the context of the spending cuts. In addition, a radically new approach to local accountability and pressure to maintain a visible policing presence will pose serious challenges to the police service. The Police Foundation’s second annual conference will address these issues from an international, national and local perspective on police effectiveness and will explore:

• The challenges to contemporary policing in a changing world

• Current approaches to meeting these challenges

• Innovations in effective policing

• Future directions for the police service

The event will be chaired by Roger Graef OBE and will include an opening address from Professor Sir Anthony Bottoms, Emeritus Professor of Criminology at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Professor at the University of Sheffield. The conference will also be addressed by:

-           Sara Thornton, Chief Constable, Thames Valley Police and Vice President, ACPO

-           Shami Chakrabarti, Director, Liberty

-           Nick Gargan, Chief Executive, National Policing Improvement Agency

-           Nick Herbert, Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice-

-           Professor David Waddington, Professor of Communications, Sheffield   Hallam University

-           Commander Simon Bray, Borough Commander, City of Westminster, Metropolitan Police Service

-           Professor Martin Innes, Director of the Universities Police Science Institute, Cardiff University

-           Superintendent Nick Budden, Specialist Staff Officer, HM Inspectorate of Constabulary

-           Gill Green, Author of Audit Commission report on migration, ‘Crossing Borders’

-           Fazil Kawani, Executive Director, Integration, Refugee Council

Complemented by a choice of three workshops exploring in depth themes such as effective strategies for policing antisocial behaviour, the policing of public order and disorder in an age of social networking and effective policing of migrant communities, the conference will provide a unique opportunity for the police service and its partners to learn about and share best practice and innovation in effective policing and crime reduction.

The conference will bring together senior members of the police service, other criminal justice agencies, the wider public sector, the third sector and academics.

PLEASE NOTE: We currently have a very limited number of places to attend an informal buffet and drinks reception on Tuesday 27th September, the night before the conference, in the renowned revolving restaurant at the BT Tower. Places to this reception are limited and   strictly allocated on a first come first served basis.
