The APA was created in 1997 to represent police authorities across England and Wales, as well as the Northern Ireland Policing Board.

In addition to our work with police authorities, we work closely with a wide range of partner organisations including the Home Office, the Association of Chief Police Officers, Independent Police Complaints Commission, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, the Audit Commission and the Local Government Association.
We also have constructive relationships with the police staff associations and with support networks such as the National Black Police Association, British Association of Women in Policing and the Gay Police Association.
The Civil Nuclear Police Authority, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Police Committee, the Scottish Police Authorities Convenor’s Forum and the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) are all associate members of the APA.
The APA is funded primarily by subscriptions from our member police authorities and is based in an office in central London.
We are proud that since our inception our members have included, and continue to include, all of the geographically based police authorities in England and Wales and the British Transport Police Authority.
