What are they?
All police authorities must have a Standards Committee, to ensure that police authority members adhere to the highest standards of conduct in public office, and comply with the authority’s code of conduct. Some Standards Committees also take on other jobs, such as checking police force complaints, or checking police authority performance, but sometimes these jobs are done by different committees or panels. The Standards Committee is made up of both police authority members and independent lay-people, who are not members of the police authority. It must be chaired by an independent lay-person.
Who can become an independent member of this panel?
Ideally, you should have an interest in standards in public life, a motivation to serve the local community and desire to uphold local democracy. You will also need high standards of personal integrity, objectivity, independence and impartiality, and experience of complaints or standards processes will be helpful.
To be eligible to apply you cannot have been a member or officer in your police authority within the last five years and you cannot be a relative or close friend of a member or officer at the police authority
